Poetry Month 2023 Post #19: “Money”

April is #NationalPoetryMonth and I am posting a Poem-A-Day. Tax day is so stressful! And money, in general, can bring on all kinds of stress.  So, here’s a poem about money.

Money

If money is energy,
then I need more synergy,
less allergy,
less inflammatory
fees for my humanity.
This is insanity.
Money rules the world
and leaves me a curled
up ashamed little girl.
Where does all the money go?
It pushes me. I can never just slow
down and breathe, and believe
that all will be well
because money is the tell.
Taxes due. Credit cards swell,
from life, not lavish living
no over spending,
but just more bending,
more sending my spirit
to battle for the requisite
necessities, the niceties
of trying to be healthy, generous,
and alive. Money is onerous.
It’s energy seems to own us,
says it will loan us
some time away
but even there the energy sways
me toward the austere, the drear,
the peering out and saying
not enough to the joy.
